Y.M.C.A. SAILING COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
BEGINNING SAILING:
Offered for those who have never sailed and would like to learn the basics. Students will learn how to rig and de-rig a sailboat, they will lean to tack and gibe a small boat, sail upwind, and downwind, learn how to capsize and recover the boat, how to pick a proper life-jacket, and the rules of the road. Students will receive 80% practical and 20% classroom instruction. Sailors will sail with a partner so that all will learn to steer and crew the boat.
ADVANCED BEGINNERS:
Offered for those sailors who have learned how to do the basics but would like to continue working with a partner in a double handed boat. Time will be spent on proper boat balance and trim, sail trim, and lots of guided hands on drills to improve confidence and boat handling skills.
INTERMEDIATE SAILING:
Offered for those sailors who would like to start on their Small Boat Sailing Certificate. Students will work on their "Little Red Books" and begin to have their skills signed off on when they have shown their instructors that they have the necessary boat handling skills. Lots of hands on sailing and some beginning work on sailing theory. Lots of SINGLE HANDED sailing!
ADVANCED SAILING:
Offered for those sailors who have lots of experience in sailing small boats and who wish to complete their Small Boat Sailing Certificate. Lots of SINGLE HANDED sailing with experiences in different boats. Instructors will coach students as they are on the water doing boat handling drills. Racing will be introduced to those who wish to learn the very basics.
RACE CAMP:
Offered for those advanced sailors who wish to learn how to set up and race sailboats. Students will cover Rules, Starting techniques, Strategy for sailing triangular and Olympic style courses. Lots of practice in racing small sailboats.
